KAZ 201Academic Kazakh I 3 Credits

Students who have enrolled in Academic Kazakh I are already expected to function at the B1 level according to national standards. The goal of the class is to lead students to function well at the B2 level. It will further develop the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in Kazakh in a range of predictable/ unpredictable situations and familiarize students with a range of new grammar structures. The class activities will focus on listening, speaking and students will be encouraged to practice reading and writing skills in their own time. Students will work with materials for intermediate and learn to give opinions on different topics, analyze the text, compare statistical data and write an essay in this course. Hence students will learn vocabulary and grammar appropriately each theme. Furthermore, students will additionally learn new terms demonstrating Kazakh culture in this course. (This course replaces KAZ 201 Kazakh Literature, which was taught once in Fall 2011 for no credit.)

Students enrolled in Academic Kazakh II are expected to function at the B2 level. The goal of the course is to lead students to function well at the B2 level and make significant progress at the C1 level. The class activities will focus on listening, speaking, writing and reading. Students will learn how to deliver detailed and organized presentations based on a variety of concrete academic, social, and professional topics, using organized paragraphs across major periods. They also will work with fictional and informative texts for reading and discussion, analyze, write essay or report and read articles and report concerned with contemporary problems.
RFL 103Beginning Russian 3 Credits

This course is for students with very little or no pervious classroom instruction in Russian. Proficiency-based approach with stress the development of communicative abilities in-and outside the classroom. The students will learn to read and understand spoken Russian in basic and predictable everyday contexts (such as introducing themselves, talking about their families, friends, everyday activities and hobbies, ordering a meal in a restaurant, asking directions on the street) and develop basic skills in reading and writing. Students will learn elementary grammatical structures of Russian and acquire basic vocabulary. Upon completion of this course, the students will have novice high or intermediate low language skills.

Strategic Management is cornerstone course in the business curriculum, designed to equip students with the essential knowledge and skills to formulate and implement effective strategies in organizations. This course delves into the principles, theories, and practical applications of strategic management, emphasizing the critical role of strategic thinking in achieving competitive advantage and sustainable success. Students will explore the strategic management process from environmental analysis and strategy formulation to strategy implementation and evaluation. Special emphasis will be placed on understanding industry dynamics, competitive positioning, and the role of innovation is shaping organizational strategies. Topics covered include strategic planning frameworks, such as SWOT analysis, PESTLE analysis, and Porter's Five Forces, as well as strategic decision-making models and tools for assessing organizational capabilities and resources. Additionally, the course will address contemporary issues in strategic management, such as digital disruption, globalization, and corporate social responsibility.

This course introduces students to cross-border and cross-cultural business transactions in Asia and emerging markets. Analyzing cases studies of different types of real business deals, the course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive overview of doing business in these regions and the opportunity to strategize as corporate decision makers through discussions, role plays, and presentations. The objective is to sharpen students' capabilities in deal structuring, financing, negotiating, and deal closing from a strategic management perspective. This course intends to develop a deep understanding of the contextual factors of Asia and emerging market countries, with a specific emphasis on the risks, challenges, and mitigants to doing business in these countries. In studying key business, political, economic, social, financial, and cultural characteristics of these countries, students will recognize regional differences and learn to develop relevant business strategies. Students will also explore how country differences impact business strategies and managerial decision-making. In addition, concepts that relate to corruption, corporate governance, and ESG will be covered. For GBUS students or students with instructor's approval only.
